Autism Assessment (Over 6 years)
Children and adolescents diagnosed with autism in British Columbia are entitled to receive Autism Funding from the provincial government until the age of 19. In order to access autism funding for children over 6-years-old, a psychology assessment is required by a Licensed Psychologist or paediatrician that includes autism testing. A speech-language assessment is not required for children over the age of 6.
It is important that families with children over 6 years and/or adolescents seek out a psychologist with experience assessing autism.
What to expect from an Autism Assessment for children under 6 years old:
Following an intake with the Reframe Psychology and Counselling Clinic Intake team, and a clinical file review, one virtual parent/caregiver interview will be scheduled with Dr. Hupton who will complete a clinical interview and the Autism Diagnostic Interview (ADI-R). This provides flexibility for families so that they are not coordinating child care and/or additional transportation for their child who may struggle to wait for this process to be completed.
One in-person assessment session, including a play-based observational autism assessment. For children under the age of 12, a cognitive assessment will also be included to rule out any processing difficulties that not yet been identified. This session can take up to 3 hours and are often scheduled on weekends so parents/caregivers are not having to miss work. Snacks and beverages are available for both children, adolescents, and parents/caregivers as needed.
Diagnostic feedback meeting with parents/caregivers to provide the outcomes of the assessment as a whole. This includes clinical observations, testing results, and recommendations tailored to their child for at home, at school, and in the community.
Accessible, but comprehensive assessment report. Parents/caregivers will be provided with an autism assessment report completed by Dr. Hupton that can be shared with their paediatrician, school program, and additional community supports as needed.
Please note: As of March 2027, Autism Funding in British Columbia will be transitioning to the new provincial Child and Youth Disability Benefit, which may impact the level of funding children, adolescents, and their families may be able eligible for. It is recommended that parents and caregivers remain up to date on these changes via the Child and Youth with Support Needs (CYSN) program if they qualify for Autism Funding.
